The postscript to America's bloodiest day has been substantially ignored until now. No full-lenth narrative of the September 19-20, 1962 engagement near the hamlet of Shepherdstown, Virginia has ever been written. Just down river from this village on the Potomac was a shallow crossing called Boteler's Ford. The events that took place here were critical to the outcome of the Antietam campaign. In terms of troops engaged and the number of casualties, this battle was the largest fought in what is now the state of West Virginia.
